Project

JewishBalkans.eu aims to promote the diversity of Jewish heritage in southeast Europe, to explain the backgrounds and to encourage travel and discovery.

Its focus is set on what is arguably the least known land in Europe: Bulgaria. The information, photographs and stories of Bulgarian Jewish heritage on jewishbalkans.eu has been researched, collected and put in context for over 15 years. It is being periodically updated.

In addition to Bulgaria, this site includes information about the Jewish heritage of the neighbouring countries: Turkey, Greece, North Macedonia, Serbia and Romania. The reason for this is that Bulgaria, as well as its neighbours, historically belong to a larger entity that transcends today's borders. Bulgaria has always sat at a crossroads and through the centuries its frontliers have shifted more than once. Jewish communities prospered and perished in the same towns but lived in different states. Nothing illustrates this better than the common Jewish heritage of the southeast European countries.

This site complements a hardcover book, A Guide to Jewish Bulgaria, first published in 2011, with an expanded and updated second edition in 2021. The book can be ordered here.

Both A Guide to Jewish Bulgaria and JewishBalkans.eu have been made possible with the generous support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation, which is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of cultural and historical heritage in Bulgaria, and development of incentive tourism.
